Saw Return of the King last night. It rocked, rocked, rocked! Whew. What a trip. Am still high.
So, some things I loved about the Eowyn portrayal, like, "Give me your sword! Take the reins!" and some things left me wistful, like the fact that she didn't have her great speech to the Lord of the Nazgul. "Do what you will, I will hinder it if I may!" I also was reminded of the difference in her character between the books and the movies. In the book, she was almost a bitch - she was so cold, and so full of despair, and desperation, that when facing down the Witch-King she had no fear, because she had nothing to lose. In the movie, she was much more warm and approachable as a person, and easier to relate to (not, obviously, that I had any problem relating when reading the books.) And when facing off with the Witch-King in the movie, she had fear in her eyes, which was never the way I saw it in my mind. I always pictured her an unwavering bright flaming icon, like in that postcard Maggie gave me, instead of a desperate, scared human. Although I kind of liked the way she was just one human fighter against a malign force, too. I guess I just wish she had gone so far over the edge that she lost it, like Ivanova in Babylon 5, in that final battle. And although I wish they had let her keep her lines,
cycon pointed out that movies are primarily a visual medium, whereas books are a verbal medium, and so pictures will supplant the words in a movie and that's how it should be sometimes, which is true. I guess I'm writing this to keep both the different images of Eowyn in my head, and not let the movie image supplant my own, because I like them both for different reasons.
But they did give her a strong sword-arm, which was gratifying. Hack, 1, 2, 3, and the fiercest beast in the movie loses his head. Boo-yah.
Anyways, am so so glad I went. I was scared yesterday that I would be dead today, but I'm still high from last night, and 3 cups of coffee this morning is doing wonders. Although my eyes are beginning to go in and out of focus now, so it might be time for another cup.
I'm just so happy. Maybe it's the drugged effect of caffeine? I feel like the weather is beautiful and people are beautiful and life is good. This is also largely due to the totally excellent holiday breakfast at Longy this morning. The president nearly ended up with fuzzy bunny slippers in the Yankee swap, until the vice president stole them. I love working there. The people are all so excellent.
