Today was a day off - our first, in fact, although since sometimes we don't have rehearsal until the evening, it feels like I've had more than enough time off. [livejournal.com profile] chorusgirl19 and I went shopping this morning, since among other things, I need a nice black dress for an upcoming wedding I'm going to be a bridesmaid in. (The bride had the charming notion of just telling everyone to buy a black dress with cream accents, bless her.) After discovering that most of the shops in Charleston charge about $200 for a tank top, we found a dress at Ann Taylor that won't beggar me and looks good on me (and what a chore that is, finding clothes that look good.) They don't have it in petite yet, so I have to wait a few weeks, but I feel glad that I found a good, nice, dressy black dress that looks good.

Afterwards we went and ate pizza and sat in the window of the pizza place and condemned or approved the outfits of passersby, as an educational exercise.

[livejournal.com profile] chorusgirl19 has been trying all year (as enterprising readers may remember) to instill some fashion sense into me, and although I know she finds it a slow, arduous process, and I rather delight in saying recalcitrant things to exasperate her, she has been having an effect (as has SJ.) If I were still a computer tech, it would be hopeless, but it is useless to deny that as a conductor, presentation is going to be part of my job. I only have to think about the rigorous scrutiny that students subject the Westminster conductors to in choir rehearsal to realize that. Right now she's just trying to teach me the basics of cut and fit and line, of what emphasizes what, and how to best flatter my shape (we concentrate on cut mostly, and not much on print or color or texture). It's hard enough to find clothing that combines my personal proclivities (flowy, Ren-faire, velvet, cotton, loveable worn t-shirts, geeky black) with what looks good. I get daunted when I think of graduating, and having to combine a professional appearance with those factors.

We're also addressing work ethic. "Finding clothes that look good on you is hard work, and you just have to accept that." We're going to have to up my endurance, too. After 3 hours of shopping for any kind of attire, I've lost the will to live.

Speaking of shopping, though, I just remembered that I haven't yet checked out the music/book shop across the street. My endurance for that kind of shopping is sky-high.
