Giving used books to friends. Opinions?

What about used CDs?

(I don't mind getting either - my uncle and I have a system worked out where he always gives me used books and CDs, and I love it - but I am wondering how this comes across with friends with whom you don't have a system.)

I think IFF you have reason to believe they would enjoy the specific example of media? I mean, I have a lot of used books, and if I randomly gave them to a friend, I think that would be lame. But if I knew you loved George Burns, and I gave you some used George Burns books, what could be bad about that?

Oh, you highlight an aspect I had not thought of. It didn't occur to me that people might think these were from my own library. I was mostly thinking about getting things from people's Amazon wishlists in a used version, or else being in a used bookstore and seeing something that I thought someone would like.

Oh. If you saw something you thought someone would like, and then got it for them, I still don't see how that could be ill-perceived, unless it was by someone who really stands on protocol for "what is proper and traditional".

I think it's an awesome idea. Books and cds are fabulous gifts, and it's not as though their having been read or listen-to changes them in any meaningful way. :-)

Glad to have my opinion backed up by a competent authority! (Gilbert and Sullivan reference. :)

Yes, I'm with osirus brisbane - giving people things you know they'd like, regardless of provenance/use, is nice. Gifts are nice.
